Weather forecast on Long Island: Halloween looks good

Trick-or-treaters can expect a warm and sunny Halloween this year – perhaps the hottest on record on Long Island, according to National Weather Service meteorologists.

Temperatures will rise throughout the week, reaching the mid-70s on parts of the island Thursday afternoon with conditions 15 to 20 degrees above normal for late October, Dominic Ramunni said. National Weather Service meteorologist.

“We are currently forecasting the hottest Halloween on record,” he said.

October was also “remarkably dry,” Ramunni added, with only a tenth of an inch of precipitation falling in the region so far this month. This puts Long Island on track to potentially experience its driest month on record.

Despite the hot and dry conditions, weather services expect the risk of fire spread to decrease throughout the week, especially on Tuesday, when there could be some rain, Ramunni said.

The service issued a special weather statement Sunday warning the region of a high risk of fire spread due to low relative humidity and “dry fuels.” While the declaration is in effect, the agency strongly discourages outdoor burning.

The weather service plans to extend this declaration until Monday, Ramunni confirmed.

The weather service also issued a red flag warning Saturday to indicate “imminent danger of severe fires,” according to the National Weather Service website.

“The winds have calmed since yesterday, so the threat is not as potent as it was, but nevertheless, given the dry conditions, low relative humidity today and perhaps again tomorrow, there is certainly a high threat of fire spreading,” Ramunni said on Sunday.

Monday will be sunny with a high temperature near 59 degrees, according to the weather service. A north wind around 6 mph is expected to shift to become east in the afternoon.
