HONOLULU (KHON2) — The recent increase in colon cancer cases has led to an increase in screening, especially for people 45 and older.

While colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the United States, the survival rate is 90% when colorectal cancer is detected early. The American Cancer Society has lowered the recommended age for screening from 50 to 45.

Ask a Specialist – Colon Cancer Screening

“The direct access screening colonoscopy program at Queens Medical Center West-Oahu simplifies this process. A simple phone call to a qualified nurse and everything starts. It’s a practical way to take a proactive step for your health,” said Nafanua Braginski, APRN, Queen’s Medical Center-West Oahu.

During a typical screening call, the nurse will review your medical history and ask you a few questions.

“These criteria questions help determine if you are healthy enough to have a colonoscopy without a clinic visit. This first screening is free and generally lasts around 20 minutes, which represents a small investment of your time for your well-being. And if during your call you are identified as someone who is more appropriate to be seen in the office, we will let you know and then schedule you to visit the office,” Braginski added.

To get started, ask your primary care provider for a referral.

“Then our registered nurses will review your information and contact you if you are eligible. Many have found peace of mind when using our direct access program, as it saves them time and does not need to travel to the office. We are here to support you every step of the way. So let’s be proactive today to achieve better health outcomes tomorrow,” Braginski said.
