The Scissor Sisters reflect on being labeled a ‘gay band’

THE Scissor sisters I want to set the record straight on how they were labeled.

Although the group was formed in New York’s gay night scene and their name was derived from a lesbian sex act, the Scissor Sisters – which has three gay members – felt limited by being labeled a “gay group” at the time. early 2000s.

In a new interview with NMEleader Jason “Jake Shears” Sellards said, “I was looking at our heterosexual counterparts and, like, I was a little resentful that we kind of had this extra label that made it easier for some (people) to dismiss us.”

Backing vocalist Scott “Babydaddy” Hoffman agreed, saying, “We used to say, ‘What’s a gay band?’ Is this Village People? Because it’s not us. He also acknowledged that the term is “a lot less loaded now”, admitting: “I don’t really know what it was supposed to say, except that we were open about who we were and there were certain themes (in our music) ) which were definitely queer themes.”

“I don’t think that’s a compliment,” added guitarist Del Marquis. “At that time, I think it was rooted in homophobia. We were getting a lot more ‘camper than a row of tents’ (comments).”

The band also had a problem with the “camp” label. “I met Gore Vidal just before he died – which was a very special moment for me – and I’ll never forget him turning to me and saying, ‘Camp is just ‘another word for people who don’t have talent,'” Shears, 46, revealed, saying that being called camp “made me a little crazy.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Scissor Sisters also spoke about how their fans reacted to their reunion.

“Since we announced the reunion, people have said they were too young to see us (the first time), but not too young to not be affected by us and the unintended message of the (first) album” , said Marquis. 47, says. “Sometimes it’s the most touching thing: when you’re so young and no one is defending you, you can get a glimpse of another life or another world in bands and in music. What if we occupy this space for some people, we have done our job.

The group reunited just in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their self-titled debut album in 2004. For now, the Scissor Sisters will not perform in the UK until 2025. Original member Ana Matronic will not be joining the band for the reunion due to commitments with their new podcast, Good outings.
