Uttar Pradesh: Sambhal bans storage of stones and bottles on roofs after violence linked to mosque investigation

At least four people were killed and several others, including around twenty security agents and four members of the administration, were injured. protesters oppose court-ordered investigation into Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid mosque In Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, clashes took place with the police on Sunday, November 24.

After the clashes, the Sambhal administration banned individuals from buying or collecting stones, soda bottles or any other flammable or explosive materials from rooftops.

An order issued by the Sambhal sub-district magistrate said strict action would be taken against those found hoarding the banned items.

In its order, the SDM also directed the local civic body to ensure that if any construction materials were found on the roads, they should be confiscated.

Earlier today, in view of the prevailing security situation in Sambhal, internet services were also suspended in the district for 24 hours and a public holiday was also declared on November 25 for all students up to class 12.

The unrest notably began on Sunday morning when a large group of people gathered near the Shahi Jama Masjid mosque and began shouting slogans as the investigation team began its work.

Images shared on social media showed protesters throwing stones at police from the tops of buildings and in front of the Shahi Jama mosque. Later, police officers were reportedly seen cornering and beating people as they tried to disperse a large crowd in a narrow alley.

The visuals also showed an alley dotted with a large number of slippers, bricks and stones. In another alleged clip, police officers in riot gear were seen firing shots toward an alley as flames leaped and smoke billowed into the air in the background.
