How to prevent Google Chrome from redirecting to Microsoft Bing

Google is the top choice for search queries and is the default search engine on Google Chrome. However, it may come as a surprise if you land on Bing’s search page after entering your query in Chrome. The reason behind this redirect could be as simple as someone changing the default search engine or a glitch in the settings. This guide shows you how to remove Microsoft Bing on Chrome, whether on a desktop, smartphone, or one of our favorite tablets.

Why would Google redirect to Bing?

The simplest reason why Google redirects to Bing could be a change in browser settings. You or someone else using the computer may have changed the default search engine in Chrome. Sometimes a browser extension or software update can change browser settings.

Another possibility could be a browser hijacker called the Bing redirect virus. It takes control of the browser and changes network settings without your knowledge. The hijacker gains access to the device through shady websites that host malware, malvertising, or pirated software. It automatically installs a malicious browser extension or tricks you into getting one. The malware redirects you to another search engine or website to display unwanted ads or collect data.

You can prevent Google from redirecting to Bing by changing Chrome settings or removing malicious extensions. If that doesn’t work, scan your computer for and remove malware.

If your Chrome browser still redirects you to Chrome, reset it. After resetting your Google Chrome profile, the browser settings return to their default state. Here is the effect of a reset on Chrome:

  • Sets Google as the default search engine.

  • Deletes site data and cookies.

  • Resets your tab pages and custom home page to default.

  • Removes your content settings.

  • Remove your themes and extensions.

You will keep your passwords, bookmarks, and browsing history after resetting Chrome.

Here’s how to reset Chrome:

  1. Launch it Chromium browser.

  2. Click on the overflow menu.

  3. Choose Settings.

  4. Select Reset settings of the side panel.

Run a malware scan

If removing suspicious Chrome extensions does not resolve the redirect issue, run a scan on your computer to remove malware. Your computer may be equipped with the Bing redirect browser hijacker, which sends traffic to suspicious websites on Bing.

You can remove malware by running Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows PC. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Type Windows Security in the Start menu search bar.

  2. Click on the Windows Security App.

  3. Choose Protection against viruses and threats.
