Wukong Doesn’t Deserve a Game Awards GOTY Nomination (And Here’s Why)

A strong case can be made that Dark myth: Wukong does not deserve its nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. Earlier today, Wu Kong was revealed will be in the running for GOTY at next month’s Game Awards alongside Astro Bot, Balatro, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Elden Ring: Shadow of the ErdtreeAnd Metaphor: ReFantazio. And although it is undeniable that Dark myth: Wukong was one of the biggest success stories of 2024, it hasn’t really received the same kind of critical acclaim to warrant such a nomination.

When Dark myth: Wukong launched in August, it broke all kinds of records. These records were specifically seen on Steam, where it became the most concurrently played single-player game on the PC platform. Since then, it has exceeded 20 million copies sold and has even helped to further increase the sales of the PlayStation 5. Without a doubt, Dark myth: Wukong was a resounding success and shows the power that games from China could have in the years to come.

Even with all that being said, Dark myth: Wukong hasn’t exactly been a critical darling that would suggest it’s in the conversation for game of the year. On the global review site Metacritic, Wu Kong has a solid score of 81/100 for its PC version, while the PS5 version was rated at a more paltry 76/100. Overall, this places him 112th top rated game of 2024 on Metacritic and is well behind the likes of Tekken 8 (overall score of 90/100), Animal well (overall score of 91/100), and Like a dragon: infinite wealth (overall score of 89/100).

Beyond 2024 only, what further evidence does Dark myth: Wukong It probably shouldn’t have won Game of the Year at the Game Awards, but it’s the lowest-reviewed game to ever be in the running for that honor. Since the launch of the Game Awards in 2014, the overall score of 81/100 for Dark myth: Wukong is the lowest ever for a title in the running for Game of the Year. Previous lows were seen with Death Stranding (2019) And A Plague Tale: Requiem (2022), which each received overall scores of 82/100.

I’m not saying all this to try to discredit Dark myth: Wukong whatever. Once again, the game fully deserves the success it has had and I am delighted for those of the developer Game Science. Additionally, Metacritic is by no means a perfect science and the scores for all the games mentioned here only provide an overview of how they were received. Yet it’s hard for me to see how Dark myth: Wukong landed this Game of the Year nomination among several other seemingly much more deserving titles. At least it’s a good thing that The Game Awards don’t really matter and focus more on showcasing what’s coming in the future rather than truly recognizing the best games of the year.
