San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after Friday’s practice as the team prepares for their Week 10 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Here’s everything he said.

Transcript provided by San Francisco 49ers communications staff.

Opening comments:

“Playing injuries: (DL) Kevin Givens will be absent, (WR) Chris Conley will be absent, (CB) Charvarius district will be released, (DL) Yetur (Gross-Matos)outside, (DL) Nick Bosaquestionable, (WR) Deebo (Samuel Sr.), questionable, (OL Jon) Felicianoquestionable, (S Malik) Mustaphaquestionable, and (QB Christian) McCaffreyquestionable. Pursue.”

I know the service for Charvarius ‘Mooney’ Ward’s daughter was held today. What was the representation of the 49ers, to your knowledge?

“No players or coaches were able to go, unfortunately. I know (president of football operations/general manager John) Lynch went there, I don’t know the exact number, but a number of our support staff .I know (senior director of players affairs and engagement) Austin (Moss), Pastor Earl I got to FaceTime with Lynch yesterday to attend the service, I spoke to him earlier today after the service ended. gave the eulogy he gave and he has been very grateful for everyone’s support throughout all of this.”

Does the fact that Feliciano is questionable mean he could be activated before the game?

“It might, yes. Probably not, but we still have some things to decide here in the next 24 hours. But it’s kind of comparable to a lot of other places.”

With Christian being doubtful, is this a situation where you can’t list him, you have to list him as doubtful until you activate him?

“Yeah. We’ll get him off the IR or whatever tomorrow, and then he’ll be good to go. Unless something crazy happens on this plane ride, he should be good to go tomorrow once that he will have left the IR.”

Did he look like the old Christian in training this week?

“Yes, he had a good week.”

This Tampa defense stacks the box a little bit against running backs and you’ve faced a lot of stacked boxes this year, but you’ve had a lot of success against it. Why would you say this is the case?

“I think stacked boxes are, there’s not as much space, but sometimes you get the most yards against teams that stack the box. When you stack the box, a person comes out of a space and there’s only one guy left and that guy is 20 yards away and there’s two corners on the outside with receivers to block so a stacked box sometimes gives up the most yards. remain in a double hull, yes, there’s a little more space and everything, but once you get into that six meter zone, there’s two security swarming together, there’s two clouds condensing everything. so more space to start but it’s a tough sled against an eight man box that’s why they often put you in second and twelfth and when you’re in that position they can give you back. one-dimensional and scare you out of the race. That’s why it’s always been tough against (Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach). ) Todd’s Stuff (Bowles). He’s going to try to stop the run and choose when to do it, but it’s always a challenge against these guys.

What have you seen this week from S Tashaun Gipson Sr.? Would he potentially be in the mix to be bred tomorrow?

“Yeah, he’s in the mix. Especially with Mustapha being questionable. He had a week of practice in Jacksonville, he did an awesome job this week in his three days. And we’ll discuss that with him over the course of the next 24 hours It’s nicer being on the east coast we have up to four hours instead of one But these are all things he looks good enough to do it. depends in some way on the health of everyone.

The defense hasn’t changed at all with the change of coordinator?

“No.”

I know DL Sam Okuayinonu was here late last year, but did you know much about him and really expect him to contribute in, say, training camp?

“Yeah, we did it in training camp. I kind of started in OTAs. I didn’t really know much about him at the end of last year, he was coming in so late and everything that But I knew everyone loved him and then watched him OTA in phase one, phase two OTA, just us watching how he moved and stuff individually, we were excited about him and then he had a. training camp Unbelievable in training camp, he was one of the best players on the training pitch and we were really excited about him. And then he pulled his hamstring, I think it was. his hamstring, so he missed several weeks and didn’t really get a chance to do it as much during games and he kind of fell a little bit under the radar there. days or whatever, it was a problem at the camp.

He mentioned when he was on the practice squad that he didn’t really want to look good and become the practice squad player of the week. He wanted to disturb and piss off people. He said he may have managed to do that and piss you off a few times. Is this correct?

“Definitely, but both ways. There’s a fine line with the scout team. I want guys to compete, I want them to get better. I also want them to prepare our guys to play. And for You don’t sit there with your brother-in-law, with the people, and just say, “Hey, let’s just do this to make the coach happy.” do not encourage anyone to compete or don’t prepare someone for Sunday. But also, you can’t just wreak havoc on every play and do things that they won’t see in the game just to get There’s. so a limit to that and he’s such a violent guy, and you can’t cut and all that in training, so when you have guys attacking people and there’s no. threatens to cut, it’s one of the most. unfair in football because you just have to stand up and accept it That’s why I always believe in cuts, not because you do it, because if people know you can cut someone, then they. cannot go for a reckless suicide bomber. He knows we can’t do that in training, he’s done it a few times behind the back and all that, and that’s when I got bothered by him. But I was also excited because. Half the time people were complaining about him, I was picking on the guys who were complaining about him because if they wanted to do something, block him. So there is a fine line between the two. But he was a stud on the practice squad, he just had to learn how to totally do it. »

Does K Jake Moody made the progress you expected when he sprained his ankle?

“More than that. I have a lot of experience with high ankle sprains and it is one of the most aggravating and annoying injuries a player can suffer. I have had no experience with a kicker, especially on his kicking so I just assumed it would be an IR and all that and especially on his kicking foot But I was a little surprised that he had. said it would be worse on his foot vegetable, just that I didn’t really understand how to kick.”

You didn’t get to see much of DL Khalil Davisthe new guy. How important is it to have a big rotation of defensive linemen in this heat?

“It’s important. Especially with the heat, I think the style of play is always important. We like to have eight guys, we would always like to have nine guys. It’s not always possible. And we “I had guys stoned this year, starting with (DL Javon) Hargrave losing for the year, not having (DL) Kevin (Givens) this week, (DL) Kalia (Davis) coming back late. It’s going to be really tough with Khalil Davis and Kalia Davis In my opinion. But we need more depth just with injuries and the more the merrier. We were excited to be able to get him here and he’s fitting in really well this week. »

Was familiarity with Houston’s coaching staff something that helped get him over the finish line at the last minute?

“I think it would be more of a question for John. I don’t totally think so. I know all 32 teams discuss possibilities on every player and he was a possibility. We look at everything. I’m sure they have also passed that on to other teams But when you have a player that you don’t know and you have guys that know him and that you trust, you can also see him do things that you don’t. not I just have to imagine if he could do it, you. can see him doing it a little bit and having guys like (DL). Maliek (Collins) and stuff about our own team, who could vouch for him, that stuff made it a lot easier for us to pull the trigger. »

With what Bosa was able to do this week, are you worried about him on Sunday?

“I am to a certain extent. He wasn’t able to do much. He was definitely extremely limited. I hope he’s OK, but we’ll see on Sunday.”

Was he injured entering the Bye?

“No. He just bumped into someone, he hit his hip a little and it just bothered him. I think it was very early in Wednesday’s practice.”
