Secret Service Agents Using Strava Inadvertently Notify Fitness App Users of Moves by Biden, Trump and Others

The sensitive movements of President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump could be easily traceable due to Secret Service Agents using the fitness application Strava, a French newspaper discovered on Monday.

Strava, used by 120 million people worldwide, allows runners and cyclists to record and share their workouts online. Its ability to track users’ movements had already raised alarms at the Pentagon, fearing that soldiers using the app would reveal the locations of secret US military bases.

A recent survey conducted by The World discovered some Secret Service agents active on the app, particularly in the weeks following the two assassination attempts against Trump.

In one case, an agent assigned to Biden went jogging and mapped out his route during the 81-year-old president’s trip to San Francisco in 2023 for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The outlet was able to determine the hotel Biden was staying at during his West Coast trip based on data appearing on the agent’s Strava profile.

Le Monde discovered that the movements of former first lady Melania Trump and first lady Jill Biden could also be tracked thanks to Secret Service agents using Strava.

The Secret Service says the release of the location information did not put protected individuals at additional risk, but said it was reviewing its policies.

“The staff concerned have been notified,” the agency told Le Monde in a press release. “We will review this information to determine if additional training or guidance is necessary.”

“We do not assess whether there have been impacts on protection operations or threats to protected persons,” the statement continued, noting that locations “are routinely disclosed as part of public publications.”
