Jon Stewart discusses Trump’s election and Democratic strategy

Jon Stewart deepened the analysis of the presidential campaign from his first return to The daily show since Donald Trump’s electoral victory.

“Turns out the election was stolen by more people voting for Donald Trump. » Stewart joked Monday evening. “That’s a lot of stupidity.”

In his 15-minute monologue, Stewart played a series of clips from Democratic pundits and strategists analyzing Trump’s victory. “It’s a pleasure to hear so many people who were wrong about what was going to happen explain why it happened,” he joked.

Stewart then addressed theories that Democratic campaigns were “too woke,” airing clips this week from news programs alleging that the left was too concerned with politically correct virtue signaling to win an election.

“I only have one problem with the awakening theory,” Stewart said. “I just didn’t remember seeing Democrats running with woke shit.”

The show then cut to a montage of centrist Democratic campaign ads positioning the candidates as pro-police, anti-illegal immigrants and critical of transgender health care.

“And don’t forget Kamala Harris. It’s not like she’s exactly waving around her NPR tote bag,” Stewart said before the now-viral clip of the vice president saying, “I have a Glock.”

“They have acted like Republicans for the last four months,” Stewart lamented. “They wore camouflage hats and went to Cheney family reunions. Do you know how dangerous it is to wear a hunting hat in Cheney?

He continued: “Democrats were mostly running against an identity that had been defined for them based on a few months after George Floyd undoing police Instagram posts from four years ago. What happened was the country felt like the government wasn’t working for them and Democrats in particular were taking their hard earned money and giving it to people who didn’t deserve it as much as them. So the Democrats need to calm down.”

“I’m happy to say that Democrats protected democracy, just for the other side,” Stewart said after a series of clips about the threat Trump poses to the country’s system of free and fair elections.

He concluded his monologue with a message of comfort. “I’m sure any in-depth look at better policies is welcome. But I just want to reassure people: it’s not forever. The comedian then moved to a map of the Electoral College results from the 1984 presidential election, when Ronald Reagan was re-elected. Every state in the country except Minnesota voted Republican.

“Everyone thought it was the end of the Democrats,” Stewart said, “but eight years later a Democrat was back in power.”

Stewart last accommodation The daily show on election night, when the show aired as the results were pouring in. The episode ended before the race was officially called for Trump, and Stewart told his audience, “This is not the end.

“I promise you, this is not the end,” he said. “We must come together, and we must continue to fight and work day in and day out to create a better society for our children, for this world, for this country, that we know is possible. It’s possible.

Stewart, who originally hosted the Comedy Central show from 1998 to 2015, returned to The daily show in February, signing on as host every Monday until the presidential election. Last month, following a sharp increase in audiences, the actor extended its offer as host until 2025. He will also remain executive producer.

Stewart addressed the issue of the extension at the start of Monday night’s episode, when he took a deep, slow voice that he called “Resistance” and told the crowd: “I promise you for the rest of the next four years, I will only talk to you. in this tone of voice so close to the camera. I will be relentless – or, well, they will. I’m here on Mondays, really not much. There are dark weeks and holidays. That’s actually about 15 hours of resistance in total.
