New standards aim to prevent children’s furniture from tipping over

It still happens too often: every year, thousands of children are injured after knocking over a dresser, bookcase or television. And unfortunately, some of them die from their injuries.

One way to avoid this is to use a simple and inexpensive furniture anchor kit. Consumer Reports just finished testing: You can avoid a tragedy with a few dollars and a few minutes of work.

After new safety standards Coming into effect thanks to legislation championed by Consumer Reports, dressers are now designed to better withstand dangerous tip-overs. However, CR reminds parents and guardians of the need to continue anchor furniture such as bookcases, dressers and televisions.

Consumer Reports recently tested nine anchor kits available online or in stores to determine which ones provide the best rollover protection and found that there is a wide range in ease of installation and weight they can support .

CR tested each kit on every type of wall material it claimed to work with, including hollow drywall and drywall screwed into wood and metal studs. Testers used a special machine to see how much force each kit could withstand before breaking or coming loose from the wall.

These tests reinforce what CR’s advice has always been, who is at anchor in a post, no hollow drywall. CR says a lot also depends on the type of wall and stud material. It is therefore essential to have the right type of kit for your walls.

The metal one from the anti-tip kit for Simple Mount furniture sold at Home deposit performed better in the CR test with wood studs behind drywall. The average force per anchor was 347 pounds.

If you have metal studs, the QuakeHOLD! Furniture fixing straps sold at Ace Hardware, Home depositAnd Lowes performed better on CR tests. It is made of thick nylon webbing and withstands 230 pounds of force per anchor.

You should always anchor your furniture in at least two places. And, if you can, double loop your tether, as this will double the overall strength of your anchor. These preventative measures can help avoid tragedy and reassure parents.

CR recommends hiring a professional to anchor on more delicate surfaces such as exposed brick or cement walls.
