25-year-old sailor found dead in Georgia’s Ocmulgee River

Authorities are seeking information about the death of a Navy sailor whose body was found in the Ocmulgee River in Georgia.

According to a press release Shared by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Thursday, November 14, a local fisherman found the body of Devin Jeter, 25, in the river near Lumber City around 12:55 p.m. on Monday, November 11.

Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson was assisted by the GBI and agencies were able to positively identify Jeter. Her family had filed a missing person’s report with Atlanta police three days earlier, on November 8.

Jeter was last seen the evening before at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

Jeter rented a silver 2024 Jeep Compass.

At the airport, the Navy sailor rented a silver 2024 Jeep Compass with Florida license plate EWAG47. It is believed Jeter planned to travel to Jacksonville, Florida, where he was stationed.

“When Jeter did not show up for work the next day, his co-workers alerted his family, prompting them to report him missing,” the press release states.

An autopsy was performed at the GBI Coastal Crime Lab, but no apparent injuries were found. Additional tests are expected to be conducted to help determine Jeter’s cause of death.

On Friday, November 15, a GBI special agent told PEOPLE that “the car (that Jeter rented) has not been found.” No further details were available at the time.
