Forest officials identify suspected cause of fires north of Clinton

EAST FELICIANA PARISH, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) investigators believe a vehicle was likely the cause of numerous roadside wildfires near Clinton.

Fires began burning along Highway 67, which stretches about seven miles between Rist Road and Kent Road. Tuesday October 22.

East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis confirmed the fire was under control and contained on the west side of Highway 67 as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, but fire suppression efforts were still underway.

The vehicle suspected of starting the wildfire was located on Wednesday October 2024, along with the registered owner. Investigators believe a mechanical failure created an ignition source for the fires, unbeknownst to the driver.

East Feliciana Parish remains under a burning ban.

“The state is at increased risk of wildfires due to recent prolonged drought conditions, which are making vegetation highly flammable,” noted LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain, DVM. “Please avoid activities that cause open flames or sparks. Dispose of cigarettes properly, avoid parking on dry grass, and check trailers for chains. Even a small spark can start a large fire that endangers homes, wildlife and lives.

You can reach the LDAF emergency line 24 hours a day at 1-855-452-5323 or call 911.
