Imagine you can’t wait to have dinner with Anna Wintour. To discuss the CDFA/Vogue business, which is very cool and important and one of the few things you’re willing to leave the house for, because you’re in pretty bad shape and need to rest before a big trip. So you go all glam and you get all shiny and cute. And then when you arrive at the restaurant, it’s just your boyfriend who proposes to you? What a disappointment! I’m joking, I’m joking, Shaun WhiteNina Dobrev’s proposal actually seems very sweet.

Dobrev and White announced their engagement with Vogue, which is only fair since White used the magazine as a reason to trick Dobrev out of the house. According to White, Dobrev is a planner. She’s rarely surprised, but she loves being surprised, so he used everything to make his proposal a shock to her system. Dobrev had suspected that White would pop the question when they were in South Africa for the Earthshot Prize ceremony. So he decided to do it a few weeks before in New York. Good plan, right? Fake! Dobrev told her she didn’t want to go out at all until Africa. So White made an offer she couldn’t refuse. He asked his publicist to send a fake invitation to a fake CDFA/Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour. “He made the invitation so legitimate,” Dobrev says. White people hired glamour, pretended it came from Vogueand waited for her to arrive at the Golden Swan.

When Dobrev arrived and saw White under an arch of white roses, she says she “was in shock. I froze and looked at him,” she said. “She says, ‘So wait, Anna’s not here?'” White says. Dobrev doesn’t remember the rest of his proposal, saying it kind of faded away. But she said yes, and all of the couple’s friends and family came to celebrate! But not Anna Wintour. She better be invited to the wedding.
