Voters seek senators focused on health, education and public safety | News

The 15 senators who will take office in 2025 should take note: Many of your constituents have been paying attention over the past two years, and many of them are not happy.

All voters interviewed Saturday by the Pacific Daily News believe that senators can do more and better if they work collectively.

Lita Larz of Barrigada thinks senators can do more to get panhandlers and homeless people off the streets.

“They should at least give them space, do something for them, give them some improvement for these people,” she said. “Sometimes they’re scary when they can get close to your car. This is definitely not a good thing for the island. They can use the enhancement.

Larz said senators can also do more to help uninsured people get quality medical care to improve their health.

Austin Fernandez of Yona said the government should hurry up and open a motorsport track already. He and his daughter Auhriene, 8, both enjoy racing quads, but haven’t been able to do so since Guam Raceway Park closed.

“The people of Guam need a place where everyone can take their craziness and put it in a place where it’s controlled, instead of putting it out on the streets,” he said. “I saw it recently, like people doing this all over the roads. It is better that this is done in a controlled area and without putting anyone in danger.

April Mendiola may be staying in Yigo, but her ties to the southern part of the island run deep.

“We need a hospital in the south. I’m sorry, but this has always been a dream of mine,” she said.

Her friend Divina Danila, from Barrigada, said the government should hurry up and open the Mangilao clinic.

“This has been going on for about three years and I’ve been waiting,” Danila said. “They’re trying to hire, but I hope they hire more locals, because I mostly see a lot of travelers, and you know, I’m trying to support locals.”

Toto resident Benita Lizama had a lot to say about the upcoming legislature.

“They have to work together not only with themselves as senators, but they have to work with the governor, you know, and make amends. Because I think it doesn’t matter who the governor is or who the senators are…they need to focus on who the people are,” she said. “We want them to collaborate and communicate what’s best for the people, for the island. Because we are too little to bicker.

“And what else?” They must improve education, schools, the school environment and I think they must also honor teachers. In schools, I think we need to improve security. And teacher pay, and I say that because I’m a teacher.

Toto’s Tony Garcia said new senators must focus on public safety.

“Keep the bad guys behind bars.” And we need drug testing for law enforcement, more often, I mean, every month,” he said. “And we need a new hospital in the south. And the roads, you know, maintain the roads. Get the funding and spend it on the roads, not elsewhere. How many times are you driving at night and you don’t see the white lines, so you swerve. It is at least, but above all, education. This case we had about schools not passing inspection on time. Children don’t have to go through this, it’s a bunch of bullshit from the government.
