New Jersey Imposes Level 3 Fire Restrictions Due to High Risk of Wildfires

TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey officials have implemented Level 3 fire restrictions statewide, banning all fires except those contained in raised stoves using propane, natural gas or electricity, following a warning issued by the United States National Weather Service. The restrictions come as dry conditions and low humidity created an increased risk of wildfires spreading Friday.

According to a special weather release issued by the U.S. National Weather Service offices in Philadelphia/Mount Holly and New York, the combination of low relative humidity levels – ranging from 25% to 35% – and winds from The west blowing between 10 and 15 mph increased the risk of the fire spreading quickly. Daytime temperatures between 60° and mid-60s and abundant sunshine should further dry out vegetation.

“These conditions will favor the spread of any fire which could quickly become difficult to control,” the National Weather Service said. Officials stressed that even a small spark could lead to a dangerous fire in the current weather environment.

Level 3 restrictions ban all charcoal fires and open flames, only allowing the use of gas or electric cookers. This enhanced precaution aims to minimize sources of ignition in vulnerable areas. Fire departments across the state are urging residents to follow regulations and remain cautious.

The state’s fire risk remains high and officials continue to closely monitor the situation to determine if additional measures are necessary. Residents are advised to stay informed with local updates and to heed any other directives issued by the New Jersey Wildland Fire Department.
