Indiana’s 8th District Congressional Results for the 2024 Elections

EVANSVILLE — Former state Sen. Mark Messmer, a Jasper-based Republican, will succeed retiring Republican Rep. Larry Bucshon in one of the most Republican congressional districts in the country.

Messmer, who bills himself as “pro-life, pro-gun and pro-Trump,” defeated Democrat Erik Hurt of Evansville and Libertarian Richard Fitzlaff of Terre Haute in 21 counties.th District. The district includes Vanderburgh, Warrick, Gibson and Posey counties.

Bucshon, a former heart surgeon, announced in January that he hang up his spurs and leave Congress.

The 8th District, based in south and west-central Indiana, stretches from southern Posey County across the Illinois-Indiana border to the top of Fountain County. It includes all or part of 21 counties.

The result was in no doubt for the politically handicapped

The 8th District race was not supposed to be close. Republican Messmer had every advantage going into Election Day.

The 8th is one of the most Republican congressional districts in the country, according to the Cook Political Report. Partisan Voting Index. The Washington, D.C.-based Political Disability Report calls the 8th District “solid Republican.”

Moreover, Federal Election Commission Report shows that as of Oct. 16, Republican Messmer had raised more than $1.4 million for his campaign to succeed Bucshon. Wounded Democrat reported raising just over $16,500. The libertarian Fitzlaff, who officially launched his campaign in August after being nominated by Congress in March, had not yet reached the FEC’s ranks. $5,000 reporting threshold.

Possessing all the advantages in the race, Messmer refused to debate Hurt and Fitzlaff.
