We expect better planning – Flathead Beacon

The Tronstad Meadows Whitetail Crossing subdivision project has become a focal point of discussions about growth in Kalispell. With more than 600 signatures on a petition and more than 170 letters submitted to the planning committee and city council since April, it’s clear that many residents are deeply concerned. But the issue goes beyond simple development: it concerns how we, as a community, manage the rapid expansion happening around us.

Although growth is inevitable, it must be approached with caution and strategic foresight. One of the most glaring issues surrounding Tronstad Meadows is the traffic study, which paints a troubling picture. The developer’s traffic study as well as an independent review by a traffic engineer show that the intersection of US Highway 93 and Tronstad Road will quickly reach a Failing Level of Service (LOS “F » – the worst rating possible). This could happen as early as Phase 1, unless a traffic light is installed and operational before the first 100 lots are built. Despite this, the Montana Department of Transportation has not committed to a specific timeline for the signal, leaving the safety of future and current residents uncertain.

Kalispell’s transportation system design standards clearly state that any development must improve or maintain the existing level of service on the roadways. Without early intervention, the LOS at this intersection will deteriorate to unacceptable levels, violating our city’s own regulations. What is more worrying is that this critical issue appeared to have been ignored by the planning committee, which approved the subdivision on October 8 without requiring the signal to be in place before Phase 1.

If the City Council makes the same mistake, approving this development without the condition of installing a working traffic light, it will not only ignore the overwhelming opposition of residents, it will also endanger public safety. It’s not just about a signal: it’s about ensuring that development is carried out responsibly, with a thorough assessment of traffic, infrastructure and the long-term impact on the community.

Approving this project without putting in place the necessary guarantees is equivalent to building a bridge whose foundations are already cracked. Failure is inevitable and it is the residents who will pay the price.

We need the City Council to take a stand for thoughtful, strategic growth. If they vote in favor of Tronstad Meadows, they must condition this approval on the installation of a traffic light before the construction of houses in phase 1. It is not just about following the procedure, it This is about ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with expansion and that future developments do not create problems that could have been avoided with proper planning.

Growth is happening, but if we want it to be sustainable, we must ask our leaders to respect the rules and standards designed to protect us.

We invite all concerned citizens to come to the municipal council meeting on November 4.

Let’s be clear: We expect better planning, smarter growth, and accountability in every decision that shapes Kalispell’s future.
