Grade 7 students design and build a small house for the homeless

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU/Gray News) – Seventh graders in Alaska are rallying to help the homeless.

The students at STREaM Academy in Anchorage designed and built a small house to meet the city’s housing needs.

The project began last year with the school’s year seven pupils and involved researching local housing needs and creating plans.

The house, which measures 8 feet by 8 feet, has a seven-degree roof angle to handle snow and rain and costs $3,650.58.

About 60 students helped build the structure, with tasks ranging from leveling the foundation to roofing.

The school will donate the tiny house next spring to a local church that is leading a campaign to house the homeless. Future plans include building furniture.
