TL;DR

  • Gemini 2.0 could be launched as early as next December.
  • The historical version would arrive around a year after Gemini 1.0.

Google has been at the forefront of AI all year long, and it seems like never a few weeks go by before we hear about the latest work on Geminiwhether Nano, Live or one of the many Extension cords. A new report now attempts to predict when the next generation of Gemini will be ready to debut.

Earlier today we saw a report from The edge claiming that OpenAI is preparing to present its next big model in December. Apparently, this could be a very busy month for the industry, as the site now claims that Google could also prepare Gemini 2.0 for December (via 9to5Google).

The timing of such a move would certainly be quite logical. After all, Google officially introduced Gemini 1.0 in the first week of December 2023. It didn’t take long to upgrade to Gemini 1.5, which we started getting access to in February, and which has already demonstrated great progress in the benchmarks compared to the initial version.

We don’t yet have many details on what we can specifically expect from Gemini 2.0, beyond anticipating the kind of generational pressure we’ve seen in other major language models. The one thing we’ve heard, though, is that Google might be looking to really get Gemini 2.0 in front of as many eyes as possible, as quickly as possible.

The way Google has operated so far, access to Gemini has been very tiered in terms of who has access to what performance level and when. Although we still expect to see multiple tiers, Google could quickly integrate Gemini 2.0 into its product offerings.
