Baltimore Orioles add depth to organization with minor league deal

This offseason promises to be busy for the Baltimore Orioles.

Not only do they have key free agents hitting the market as aces Corbin Burnes and right fielder Anthony Santander, but they also have money to spend on improving holes on the roster.

With many young players looming large in the team’s plans for the future, they can afford to spend lavishly on some big-name free agents.

Even though no domino has fallen at the top of the market, teams are busy making moves to add organizational depth to the minor leagues.

On Monday, that’s exactly what the Orioles did.

According to Jorge Castillo of ESPN, the team has reached a minor league deal with Vimael Machin. He’s an old one Athletics infielder who has not appeared in an MLB game since 2022. A client of Usus Sports Management, he spent the 2024 campaign in the Mexican League.

Machin, 31, was a 10th round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2015 MLB Draft. He landed with the Athletics in the 2019 Rule 5 Draft.

His MLB debut came during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, when he received 71 plate appearances. During the 2021 season, he made just 37 plate appearances before receiving an extension in 2022.

That year, he appeared in 73 games and made 253 plate appearances. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to do much with this opportunity as he posted a .220/.300/.287 slash line with nine doubles and a home run.

While he batted softly, Machin showed that he possessed excellent plate discipline with a great eye. He has 36 career walks in 361 plate appearances, as his 10% walk percentage is above league average.

With a little more luck, his production at the plate could improve as his average exit velocity of 88.8 mph is slightly above the league average of 88.1.

His production at Triple-A also makes it look like he has the ability to be a solid contributor.

During his career at this level, Machin posted a slash line of .291/.384/.439. During his 85-game stint with the Charros de Jalisco in Mexico, he had a mind-blowing .401/.495/.579 production line.

He will provide the Orioles with excellent organizational depth if he does not make the Major League team when he is invited to spring training.

Being a left-handed hitter only improves his chances of sticking around.
