An investigation is underway to find the people involved and determine the circumstances of the accident, said a police spokesperson.

The woman was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by Hato Hone St John in a serious condition.

She was scheduled to undergo surgery today for a suspected hip fracture, her family said.

“She is very beaten and bruised. She was hit by a car, put it that way.

The family spokesperson hoped witnesses could come forward with information or that someone with cameras would have footage of the cars that were in the area at the time.

“I hope someone knows something.”

Apollo has still not been found. He had come off his leash, but he would still wear a black harness.

A motorist at the scene shortly after emergency services arrived believed there were obvious tire marks where the woman was being treated for her injuries.

He understood that she was walking on the opposite side of the road from the car, suggesting that the vehicle had crossed the center line.

The semi-rural road is on the northern outskirts of the city.
