Video captures heartbreaking moment for DOT worker as truck crashes into vehicles

A thrilling moment caught on camera serves as another reminder to road workers to slow down and move over.

The New York State Department of Transportation has released a chilling video showing the moment a highway worker had just seconds to get out of the way before a box truck violently slammed into two DOT vehicles on the side of the road.

The crash occurred on Interstate 81 in the Broome County town of Lisle on Oct. 28, according to New York State Police.

State police reported that Muhammed A. Wesley, 36, of Phoenix, Arizona, was driving north on I-81 in a Penske box truck when he failed to see the work zone signs and DOT vehicles parked on the shoulder. Wesley struck a DOT attenuator and a small dump truck, narrowly missing a DOT employee, before leaving the road.

The DOT had posted “mow ahead” signs and both vehicles activated their amber lights to alert oncoming traffic. The workers were busy mowing and collecting trash at the time of the incident.

No serious injuries have been reported, but officials say this is another reminder to slow down and move over.

This incident highlights the importance of New York’s Move Over law, which requires drivers to slow down and, if safe, move over when approaching vehicles stopped on the road. Drivers are asked to remain vigilant, check traffic flow and pay particular attention around work zones.

Other cases occurring in work zones:Thruway employee struck and killed in WNY

The incident occurred exactly one week before a Thruway worker was struck and killed Nov. 4 while performing road maintenance in Chautauqua County.

On Monday, Gov. Kathy Hochul responded to the fatal accident, noting that it was the second fatal accident involving a Thruway maintenance worker this year.

“Earlier today, a Thruway Authority Maintenance employee tragically lost his life when he was struck by a vehicle while working on I-90 in Silver Creek. We are heartbroken by the devastating death of a dedicated public servant, and my prayers go out to his family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time. Roadside workers risk their lives every day to keep all drivers on the road safe and they deserve our utmost attention at all times. This is the second death involving a Thruway maintenance worker. this year and it’s a serious reminder to slow down, drive safely and be aware of all vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
