Bears insist on keeping Tyrique Stevenson status under wraps

The Bears’ starting lineup could be greatly affected by injuries and it is also possible that it could be affected by disciplinary action.

Coach Matt Eberflus did not reveal whether cornerback Tyrique Stevenson would face disciplinary action in the form of a suspension or fine Friday.

If he doesn’t start, it wouldn’t be the first time this year.

Stevenson was facing the wrong direction, yelling at fans as the final pass of Sunday’s Hail Mary went down against Washington. Stevenson also took the wrong assignment on the play, then sent the ball straight to the man he was supposed to cover for the points Washington needed to win 18-15.

“I’m not going to talk about who’s going to start at this specific spot,” coach Matt Eberflus said. “Again, I talked to Tyrique. He had a really good week of practice. He did a good job of refocusing.

“And I appreciate his efforts to move to the next phase, which is Arizona.”

Eberflus was asked about the importance of who started the season opener at cornerback. Stevenson did not start this game and Terell Smith did, but Stevenson arrived shortly after the game started.

Stevenson also missed the match in London, but that was due to a calf injury suffered in training.

“We have rotations for a reason,” Eberflus said. “It could be a competition. It could be a guy coming back and his workload needs to be reduced.

“It could be several things.”

Eberflus was a little more open about injuries. The Bears could get Kyler Gordon back at cornerback after a limited practice Friday, his first since suffering a hamstring injury in London. It is doubtful. Defensive end Montez Sweat is also questionable due to a shin injury that kept him out of the game-clinching game last week. He had a limited practice Thursday but no others and the Bears are counting on the 48 hours until the game to help heal so their top passer can start.

The absence of safety Jaquan Brisker will once again raise eyebrows. He hasn’t played since Oct. 6 following his third concussion.

“It’s really just symptoms,” Eberflus said. “That’s really what it is. Again, he’s made progress. He’s been in the meetings, he’s been getting into the walkthroughs and getting into these things, and then he’s these symptoms.

“Again, it’s always going to be about his safety, his health and where he is. Jaquan brings a lot of passion and energy to our team and certainly to our defense. He’s had a very Happy New Year before that. His health and safety is our priority and we want to make sure we do a good job in this area first. Then he will bring back that passion and energy like he always does.

The other big question is what their offensive line will look like. Eberflus echoed offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in saying they preferred to keep the substations one at a time rather than create confusion by moving a starter to another position, which then results in two position changes.

They will be without tackle Braxton Jones due to a knee injury and backup Kiran Amegadjie is out with a calf injury. So Larry Borom seems likely to play after spending the entire season on injured reserve due to an ankle issue dating back to training camp.

This would allow them to keep Matt Pryor at right guard. The only issue here might be if Teven Jenkins’ knee injury is too serious for him to play. He did not practice Thursday and was limited Friday.

Depth might be limited at guard and it was thought backup guard Ryan Bates might be able to come off injured reserve as his window opened to be reinstated.

“We’ll see where Ryan is,” Eberflus said. “Ryan’s first day of travel there was today, so we’ll see where that takes us.”
