Experts explain how to get rid of headaches

(Consumer Reports) – You have a headache. Maybe you stared at your computer or phone for too long. Or you skipped breakfast, didn’t sleep well, or were stressed by traffic. But now that it’s here, what can you do to get rid of it? CR explains what to take to treat the dreaded headache.

Almost everyone experiences it sometimes and some can be worse than others.

“I have a headache every other day. Mom’s life,” said Stefanie Jean-Bart, who frequently suffers from headaches.

Research shows that the prevalence of tension headaches is around 27% of the general population, while that of migraines is around 15%.

With ibuprofen, be aware that long-term use at high doses, more than 2,400 milligrams per day, may result in an increased risk of cardiovascular events.

This is why people who have recently had a heart attack are advised to avoid it.

Certain supplements and alternative treatments may also help treat your headaches.

Studies show that migraine sufferers have fewer attacks per month when they take it.

Sometimes a headache can be a sign of something serious. Here are some conditions that should prompt you to call 911 or have someone take you to the emergency room.

If you are pregnant, a headache may mean your blood pressure is too high.

Additionally, you might experience tension headaches after exercising, but if this includes chest, jaw, or neck pain, it could mean a heart attack and you should see a doctor.

It may sound strange, but several studies suggest that consuming ginger, either in the root itself or in powder form, can relieve migraines, just like an ice pack or frozen facial mask. And try a hot compress or a warm bath to relieve tension headaches.
