Electricity for life and 80 kWh

Imagine a future where you have unlimited access to clean electricity without relying on fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources. Best of all, you won’t need to rely on commercial suppliers to provide you with this energy, or pay for it. This is where Amptricity’s new home battery model comes in!

Amptricity’s solid-state battery unit is the latest in sustainable energy technology

Most recently, the US-based company launched its solid-state battery unit. By definition, it is a 265-pound battery that uses solid electrolyte cells instead of lithium-ion batteries containing liquid electrolytes.

There are different versions of this bunker-style battery unit, ranging from 12 kWh to 48 kWh. They are each equipped with an inverter and meet various energy needs. The most basic of these is the 12 kWh model: as the name suggests, it provides 12.07 kWh of usable energy, has a maximum continuous output of 3 kWh for charging and discharging, and offers peak of 5 kWh for 10 seconds. In the case of the latter, this makes the unit ideal for backup and off-grid applications.

Due to its higher energy densities, the unit achieved a round-trip efficiency of 95%, allowing it to handle up to 11,000 deep charge and discharge cycles. In terms of temperature range, it operates between -40°F and 131°F, allowing it to perform quite well in both hot and cold conditions.

The drums sound great and the benefits are even greater

From an energy perspective, this solid-state battery unit is certainly innovative. It also promises many other benefits, including:

  • Compact and lightweight design: Designed for space efficiency, this 32-inch x 19-inch x 21-inch unit can store a lot of energy. This also makes it easier for homeowners to settle into their home, whether indoors or outdoors.
  • Reduced fire risk: Due to the lack of liquid electrolytes, this reduces the risk of thermal runaway. In turn, this reduces the risk of fire or explosion.
  • 100% recyclable: The unit is constructed from non-toxic and environmentally friendly materials.
  • Fast charging and extended life: Unlike traditional batteries, they charge faster and provide a longer lifespan, allowing the unit to discharge for more than eight hours at rated power.

How much will it cost you to purchase this battery?

Efficiency and safety are the main selling points of this battery unit, which also benefits from an impressive 25-year warranty on its battery core. However, potential buyers may be deterred by the asking price of the home.

According to its website, Amptricity sells the 12 kWh model – the base version – for $16,999, including tax, but not installation and shipping costs. For the 48 kWh model, it’s a whopping $67,999.00. Again, this does not include the fees mentioned above. Regardless of which model you buy, you’ll need to shell out a substantial amount of money, as well as cover the costs of shipping it to your home and installing it by a certified electrician to ensure it’s compliant.

The waiting period is also 90-120 days after receiving full payment. While this represents Amptricity’s commitment to creating a high-quality, low-risk product, it also poses a disadvantage for those who are eager to immediately transition to renewable energy or for those who are reluctant to make the full payment in advance.

Either way, the pros of this solid-state battery certainly outweigh the cons. It empowers individuals to sustainably produce clean energy from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, it allows them to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by making a positive contribution to the environment. This makes the dream of a green future more real.
