New Royal Caribbean ban causes confusion and chaos for passengers

When you get off your cruise and head through customs, there is always a table with items that the cruise line has confiscated. Usually these tables are filled with things that inexperienced passengers don’t realize are illegal on cruise ships.

You’ll see some really ridiculous things like toasters, blenders, and coffee makers, but the vast majority of the table is filled with irons and surge protectors. These are things that apparently you should be able to fit in, but you can’t.

Royal Caribbean’s banned list is already long

Royal Caribbean has explained its policies for these items on its website:

Candles, incense, coffee makers, irons, steamers and travel hot plates. (Items that generate heat or produce an open flame. This includes heating pads, irons, hot plates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard. NOTE: The only The exception to this policy is curling irons and straightening irons. Normal matches and lighters are permitted on board. However, “torch lighters” and novelty lighters that resemble firearms are not permitted on board. Torch lighters emit a powerful concentrated flame and are therefore prohibited.

Passengers may not be aware that these items are prohibited and the cruise line understands this. This is why these items are confiscated and then returned.

However, a recent change to its banned list has made things much more complicated for Royal Caribbean passengers. That’s because it has banned certain energy-related items that other cruise lines allow.

Royal Caribbean is changing electrical outlets

Royal Caribbean no longer allows any devices that create more plugs. This includes European adapters that convert the plug to an American style plug.

“Passengers can bring adapters with multiple USB ports, but not those that include regular AC outlets, so only multi-USB outlets. This change is intended to reduce the risk of fire and avoid strain on the electrical system of the vessel, which can occur with high temperatures – electrical devices such as extension cords, surge protectors and multi-appliance outlets,” the cruise line shared.

The cruise line has updated its prohibited items page:

Extension cords – including surge protected power strips/strips and power strips. We allow USB chargers for consumer-style power conversion devices (power strips on which the outputs are for USB cables). Note: Devices must bear the conformity marking recognized by the United States and Europe to demonstrate compliance with electrical safety standards.

Royal Caribbean used to allow power strips and power strips as long as they did not have surge protection. These items are now banned although they remain permitted on other cruise lines, including Celebrity Cruises, which is also owned by Royal Caribbean.

Passengers using a CPAP machine can ask their room attendant for an approved power cord once on board.

These are the devices that Royal Caribbean allows

Older Royal Caribbean ships often only have one power outlet. For a family of four traveling with phones, tablets and even laptops, this can be very difficult.

Keeping all your devices charged in this situation requires three things:

  1. A power supply with multiple USB and USB-C ports.

  2. A charging battery with multiple ports.

  3. Multiple USB and USB-C cables.

A good power brick can turn that outlet into four (or more) charging ports. Adding a rechargeable battery can allow users to charge their devices away from the cabin desk, where the outlet is usually located.

If you charge your batteries during the day, you can use them to ensure you can charge all your devices at night.

It’s also important to have enough cable to charge multiple devices at the same time. Additionally, some casino bars and slot machines on some ships have USB charging ports.

If you have a cable with you, it is possible to charge your device away from your room.
