Bay County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about social media scam

BAY COUNTY, FL (WMBB) – The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has issued an alert after receiving several complaints about a new scam on Facebook.

According to a press release, the scammer hacks into a person’s Facebook page, once they access it, the scammer posts a list of valuable items for sale at very low prices.

Items listed are vehicles, tractors and tools that appear to be in good condition. However, due to the difficulties, the items are sold at a bargain price.

Authorities said when a potential victim shows interest in purchasing an item and messages the scammer, they are asked to make a purchase using the Cash App. If the victim is unsure, they are asked to at least send a substantial deposit to “hold” the item using the Cash App. The victim must show they are serious about the purchase and send another deposit through Cash App.

BCSO officials said the post was a scam and there were no items being sold at low prices due to illness or family hardship.

Once money is sent through the Cash App, the scam is over and the victim can no longer contact the scammer to take possession of the item, officials wrote.

Sheriff Ford urges anyone attempting to purchase an item listed on social media to make every effort to examine the item in person.
