DENVER — Although Tuesday may not have been the night Democrats across the country were hoping for, the party had a strong showing in Colorado.

“I think many of us feel a tremendous amount of anger, pain, sadness and frustration with the national results,” said Shad Murib, chairman of the Colorado Democratic Party. “What remains clear to me is that Colorado is a beacon of freedom and progress.”

Democrats appear poised to maintain their supermajority in the Colorado House of Representatives.

“I think this is a strong comment from our constituents in their support for the program that we have put forward,” said House Speaker Julie McCluskie.

She said House Democrats would build on legislation they passed last year.

“I know my caucus will remain focused on how we can help solve the affordability crisis in this state, whether it’s tackling more policies around affordable housing, health care health or child care,” McCluskie said. public schools, our colleges and our universities. We want to protect these investments and make sure we don’t go backwards.

Although Democrats will still have overwhelming control of the Colorado Senate, they narrowly missed achieving a supermajority. That means they will need Republican support to override governors’ vetoes and return to ballot measures.

“Democrats control everything, and have for several years,” said State Sen. Paul Lundeen, the Senate Republican leader. “That’s why Coloradans are saying, ‘Enough, enough. Give us a break.

Meanwhile, at the congressional level, voters re-elected nearly every member of Colorado’s congressional delegation running for office. Voters also elected Rep. Lauren Boebert to a new seat in the 4th Congressional District.

Republicans retained the seat Boebert vacated following Jeff Hurd’s victory over Democrat Adam Frisch in the 3rd Congressional District.

The race for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District remains too close to decide between Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo and Republican challenger Gabe Evans, the state’s representative. As of Wednesday afternoon, Caraveo maintained a slight lead of about 4,000 votes.

Evans’ campaign said there were still thousands of ballots to be counted and believed the outcome would be close.

The winner could help determine which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives. If Republicans take control of the U.S. House of Representatives, it will be easier for President-elect Donald Trump to pass his agenda. If Democrats take control of the House of Representatives, they will be able to block some of what he wants to do and will be able to oversee his administration.
