Nigeria moves closer to CAN 2025 after CAF awards Libya three points

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially awarded Nigeria a 3-0 victory and three points for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Libya, which was canceled earlier this month .

The match, initially scheduled for October 15 at the Martyrs de Février stadium in Benghazi, was canceled when the Nigerian team was retained for hours at a remote airport in Libya, triggering a decision by the CAF Disciplinary Board in favor of Nigeria.

CAF Disciplinary Council announcement issued its decision on Saturday, citing the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) for violating several regulations, including Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

The CAF decision declared the match forfeited by Libya. Additionally, the LFF was fined $50,000, with a 60-day payment deadline.

The move effectively places Nigeria at the top of Group D with 10 points, four points ahead of second-placed Benin Republic. A win or draw in their next match against Benin on November 14 in Abidjan will ensure Nigeria’s qualification for CAN 2025 in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong said he was satisfied with the result, adage this brings them closer to their goal for CAN 2025.
