FAA grounds US flights to Haiti after gunfire hits Spirit Airlines plane

The United States Federal Aviation Administration has placed a 30 day ban on flights from the United States to Haiti after gangs in Haiti shot up a Spirit Airlines flight that was preparing to land in the capital Port-au-Prince.

The gunfire wounded a flight attendant aboard the plane, company officials said.

On Tuesday, the FAA issued a temporary ban on “all U.S. air carriers and commercial operators,” barring them from flights to Haiti or its airspace “due to flight safety risks associated with continued security instability.”

Haiti suspended flights to and from Port-au-Prince for a week.

The United Nations also suspended aid flights to the capital following the shooting, which is expected to reduce an important access route for humanitarian aid. UN flights will now land at an airport in Cap Haitien.

These shootings come as new violence seizes the capital, where armed gangs control around 85% of the territory. Government offices and schools were closed Tuesday and police were patrolling near the airport to check transit vehicles.

Luis Abinader, president of the Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti, called the shooting a “terrorist act.”

“Countries that follow and help Haiti should declare these armed bands as terrorist groups,” he said at a press conference.

Haiti normally receives flights from American airlines Spirit, JetBlue and American Airlines.
