AI has done some fun things in recent years. People declared the alleged merits of generative AI for creating textures, they managed to achieve Doom running on a neural networkand, “any day now,” we are expected to play games inspired by user prompts. As expected, today is not that day.

Deviationan AI company that seemed to have sprung up overnight, revealed Oasis“the world’s first global real-time AI model”.

Oasis works via frame prediction. An AI model receives huge masses of data, which can then be used to predict the next image. This is why the tool seems to invent blocks and doesn’t seem to have object permanence. It doesn’t store your world’s data and loses track of what you’ve done after a while.

“Oasis takes keyboard and mouse inputs from the user and generates gameplay in real time, internally simulating physics, game rules and graphics,” Decart explains.

You are not playing the game itself, rather you are playing an approximation of the game.

In announcing this new model, Decart released where this technology can go, saying:

“Just imagine a world in which this integration is so tight that basic models could even complement modern entertainment platforms by generating content on the fly based on user preferences. Or perhaps an experience of game offering new user interaction possibilities, such as text and audio prompts guiding gameplay.

This last part suggests that users can generate their own experiences, raising the stakes on the fly or manipulating the game as they go. However, the current model is much more limited than that.

Decart seems to generate a version of Minecraft, and a pixelated one at that. The end of the trailer for this new engine says “Imagine what AI experiences could be like if everyone had the power to create them” and that’s exactly what I have to do since this game was created by Mojang almost two decades ago.

If everything goes as Decart says here, the idea of an AI-generating Minecraft could be pretty impressive, but it’s important to note that it’s not even close to the envisioned future. The work required to emulate a widely accessible game is different from the ability to effectively imagine and create tailored experiences based on user prompts.

Decart says it wants to reach a point where a user can say “Imagine there’s a pink elephant chasing me” and a pink elephant appears, but right now it’s struggling to look like a very old game using tons of training data from said game. Millions of hours of Minecraft gameplay, according to MIT Technology Review.

This before mentioning whether users want it or not, the copyright implications about where this data is being scraped from and whether the ability to frame all your art around you is particularly good for your media diet.

What is artificial general intelligence?: We dive into AI jargon and what the terms actually mean.

This tool was created with Nvidia H100 cards, and if you thought Minecraft was a generally easy game to run, that’s not the case. It runs at 360p at 20fps. Although it is proposed that the future of this hardware will be realized with Etched ASICs, Decart’s partner here. These will supposedly allow it to run this type of technology in 4K.

Of course, not all uses of this type of AI in games are simply about copying other games, and some of them are, in fact, very useful for the average gamer. AI-based frame generation can deliver much better performance in games with the same basic equipment, and in theory it also relies on generating future frames based on previous information presented to it.

I thought I’d try out Oasis by going to the siteand after spending the waiting time, everything was not loading. That’s not to say you can’t access it, just that I can’t and at this rate I’d rather just start the real thing.
