Speaking to a local television station on Friday, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes confirmed that his office was looking into the comments.

She said Mr. Trump may have violated state laws prohibiting death threats.

Mr Trump said last night that Ms Cheney would not be a “radical war hawk” if she was at war herself and had guns “pointed in her face”.

“Let’s put her there with a gun with nine barrels shooting at her, okay? Let’s see how she feels. You know, when the guns are pointed in her face,” Mr. Trump said at an event with Tucker Carlson.

“I have already asked my criminal division chief to begin reviewing this statement and analyzing it to determine whether it constitutes a death threat under Arizona law,” Mayes told 12News.

However, she added that it was not yet clear whether the comment amounted to protected free speech or a criminal threat.

“It’s a question of whether this has crossed the line. It’s deeply troubling,” Ms Mayes said.

Trump doubles down

At a rally in Michigan that ended just minutes ago, Mr. Trump appeared to redouble his efforts.

He again claimed that she “wants war”, but was not brave enough to fight in it.

“But if you gave Liz Cheney a gun and put her into combat against the other side with guns pointed at her, she wouldn’t have the courage, strength, or stamina to face the enemy in the eye,” Mr. Trump said. .

“Liz Cheney wouldn’t fight,” he later added.

“I will go with her. I will go to the Middle East, I will go wherever she wants and we will fight. She does not have the courage to fight.”
