“These are the kinds of projects that really change the dynamics and energy of communities,” said James Andersen, Green Bay’s deputy parks director.

Andersen kicked things off at the official opening of Phase 1 of the Shipyard Project.

Andersen was joined by Mayor Eric Genrich and dozens of city leaders.

“We’re just asking for your patience as we let this whole process play out, you’re going to be so proud of what’s happening here on the western edge of the city,” the District 9 alderman said, Brian Johnson.

The city says there are three phases.

Phase 1 includes a fishing pier, kayak launch and more, totaling $10.5 million in development and reviving land from contamination.

Officials said Phase 2 already has the $10 million in funding it needs, half of which is provided by the National Park Service.

There will be a city beach, festival grounds, a dog park and much more.

“This is truly a major transformation for a revitalized South Broadway,” said Matt Buchanan, Green Bay’s deputy development director.

Buchanan is helping lead the project and said there is also investment in the surrounding neighborhood.

Officials say it’s largely low-income and $1 million, including home improvement grants, was spent on neighbors.

“It’s their neighborhood park and we really wanted to make sure they had buy-in and emotional investment in this space because it’s theirs,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan said construction on Phase 2 is expected to begin in the coming months and be completed by 2026.

In the meantime, this area will host events during the NFL Draft in April, such as concerts and fireworks.
