City Charter Changes Could Impact City Council Salaries, Term Limits

SAN ANTONIO – We are considering significant changes to the city charter on the ballot, including city council salary and term limits, salary cap and city manager term limit.

The Charter amendments consist of six proposals that are now in the hands of voters. Darian Trotter is keeping a close eye on things.

The proposals can be confusing, even to the most informed voters. That’s why, in previous reports, we’ve given viewers a breakdown of each of the six proposals.

Here is a brief overview:

Proposition A: Calls for an additional allocation of funds for the ethics review committee and an expansion of the board’s authority.

Prop B: Would update city charter language to a more modern standard, including adding gender-neutral language.

Prop C: Could remove the current city manager term limit and salary cap.

Prop D: Would allow city staff members to participate in political activities without retaliation.

Prop E: Would give the city council and mayor significant pay raises.

Prop F: Would restructure the term limits for the City Council and mayor to two four-year terms instead of the current four two-year terms.

Several of these proposals have generated considerable discussion from supporters and opponents, including those regarding term limits and salary increases.

We’ll have to wait and see what the voters decide.
