As the auspicious festival of Diwali is celebrated, streets across India transform into a kaleidoscope of vibrant lights, glittering diyas and intricate rangolis. However, the customs and traditions associated with Diwali vary greatly in different regions of the country.

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, the festival of Diwali is celebrated on the night of the new moon of Kartik. In India, especially in northern India, Diwali is a five-day festival. This celebration begins on the 13th lunar day of the dark fortnight of Kartik, known as Dhanteras, and ends on the day of Bhai Dooj. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on the same day in North and South India. Diwali will be celebrated on October 31 and November 1, 2024.

Pardosh Puja Schedule

The time of Pradosh Puja is from November 1, from 5:44 p.m. to 8:19 p.m. Diwali 2024 will begin on Tuesday, October 29 with Dhanteras and end on Sunday, November 3 with Bhai Dooj. On Diwali, worship and reverence of Goddess Lakshmi takes place, as she is considered the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

  • Sunset: November 1, 5:44 p.m.
  • Amavasya Date Time: October 31, 3:53 p.m. – November 1, 6:17 p.m.

  • Nishita Kaal Time: November 1, 11:44 p.m. – November 2, 12:36 a.m.

Diwali 2024 Pujan Samagri

For Diwali puja, worship materials include idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh, along with roli, kumkum, akshat, betel leaves, areca nut, walnut coconut, cloves, cardamom, incense, camphor, incense sticks, clay lamps, cotton, Kalawa, honey, yogurt, Ganga water, jaggery, coriander, fruits, flowers, barley, wheat, durva grass, sandalwood, vermilion, Panchamrit, milk, nuts, batasha, janeu, white cloth, perfume, a pedestal, a kalash, a garland of lotus seeds, conch shell, seat mat, plate, silver coin, seating arrangement, havan kund, havan materials, mango leaves and prasad.

Diwali 2024 Puja Vidhi

First of all, clean the Ishaana corner or the north direction and draw a swastika symbol. Sprinkle akshat on top. Next, place a wooden seat covered with red fabric. Place the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh on the seat.
Before starting the puja, establish the idols of Panchadev: Surya Dev, Shri Ganesh, Durga, Shiva and Vishnu. Along with this, sanctify the facility with a pinch of Ganga water.

First begin the puja with the mantras dedicated to Lord Ganesh. Perform worship of Lord Ganesh with the following mantra:

“Gajaananam Bhoota Ganaadi Sevitam, Kapittha Jambu Phala Saara Bhakshitam. Umaasutam Shoka Vinashakaaranam, Namami Vighneshwar Paada Pankajam.”

After worshiping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh, apply red vermillion tilak on their forehead.
After the puja, perform aarti for Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh and offer sweets to them as a bhog.
Distribute the aarti and prasad among everyone.
Light lamps in every corner of the house.
