Flood warning issued for several islands

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for all islands through Sunday afternoon.

An upper-level disturbance will move across the state through Sunday and will bring a very unstable atmosphere that can easily trigger heavy showers and thunderstorms, especially in windward areas.

A flood warning has been issued for east and central Oahu until 4:15 p.m.

At 1:09 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over East Oahu, with the potential for rain over Central Oahu communities already saturated from heavy rain earlier in the day. The rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Rain flooded several areas around Oahu Saturday morning, from Manoa to Halawa.

The National Weather Service said more than 7.5 inches of rain fell in Maunawili between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Manoa recorded just over five inches during the same period, with most of it falling after 6 a.m.

Heavy rain flooded the Halawa area and Oahu was under a flash flood warning Saturday morning.

The Ala Wai Canal was one of several waterways filled with runoff and debris Saturday morning.

A flood advisory has been issued for parts of Maui until 4:30 p.m.

Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour in areas that were under a flash flood warning earlier in the day. Windward East Maui received the most precipitation, with the West Wailuaiki rain gauge recording 4.8 inches during the six-hour period that ended at 9 a.m. Hana recorded just under four inches.

A flood advisory has been issued for parts of Kauai until 4:15 p.m.

As of 1:03 p.m., radar and rain gauges showed heavy rain over windward areas of Kauai, with precipitation rates of up to 2 inches per hour from relatively quick downpours.

The Hawaii News Now Weather Team has marked Saturday and Sunday as early weather alert days for all islands.

The combination of heavy rain and high waves also led to the closure of Bayfront Highway in Hilo as large waves washed debris onto the roadway.
