The Redding Fire Department recommends driving carefully during stormy weather to avoid accidents

Redding Fire Department officials remind drivers to be careful stormy weather.

They said the number of local traffic collisions increases during storms like the ones we’re seeing in the Northstate now. So they recommend leaving extra space between you and the car in front of you to avoid accidents.

Fire prevention specialist Sarah Roth told KRCR that whether you’re driving on the highway or in the city, drivers need to control their speed at all times.

“Slow down, give yourself more time to get to your destination, make sure you’re driving with your headlights on,” Roth said before adding, “If you’re experiencing hydroplaning, you don’t want to go fast, fast movements . You want to do everything in a calmer and slower way.

Some items to have in the car in winter are jumper cables, an emergency blanket, plenty of water and food, and a cell phone charger.

RFD officials also advised keeping an eye out for large trucks and buses when you’re on the roads.

For the rainy season, there are two sandbag filling locations in Redding: one at Fire Station #4 on South Bonnyview Road and another in the lot north of Redding Sports Park, formerly known as Big League Dreams, on Viking Way.

Additionally, RFD is partnering with the Shasta County Fire Safe Council to publicize its free wood chipper service for Shasta County residents. The registration deadline for Redding residents is February 1, 2025.
