Don’t take ‘ballot selfies,’ SC law enforcement warns

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reminds voters that it is illegal to take a photo of your ballot and share it or allow your ballot to be viewed .

The agency warned voters Friday, ahead of Tuesday’s general election, that what is commonly referred to as a “voting selfie” is strictly prohibited in the Palmetto State.

South Carolina voters are not allowed to use a camera inside a voting booth, SLED spokeswoman Renée Wunderlich said.

State law Section 7-25-100 prohibits allowing your ballot to be seen, removing a ballot from a polling place, placing on a ballot any mark to identify it, to bring any mechanical device to mark a ballot and to stay longer. than the time allowed to vote after being informed of the expiration of the deadline.

It is also illegal to interfere with a voter inside a polling station or to mark another voter’s ballot; unduly influencing a voter in the preparation of a ballot, attempting to induce a voter to show how a ballot was marked or attempting to assist a voter by means of a mechanical device in marking a ballot .

Violations of the law are punishable by a fine of up to $100 or up to a year in prison.
