Arizona Cardinals close stadium roof mid-game after rain, hail

GLENDALE, Ariz. – History was made Sunday afternoon.

But it wasn’t on the ground.

For the first time in the 18-year history of State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the retractable roof closed during a game. This is also believed to be the first time in NFL history that a roof has been closed during a game, according to FootballZebras.com.

Around 2:59 p.m. Arizona time on Sunday, around the 9th minute of the second quarter, a steady rain began to fall, straight through the open roof of State Farm Stadium.

A day earlier, the Arizona Cardinals announcement the roof would be open for the second time this season, the first time during Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers on October 21.

Within a minute the roof began to close. About 10 minutes later it closed completely. However, it stopped raining before the roof was completely closed.

Under NFL rules, the referee has the authority to order the closure of a roof after consulting with the stadium manager and the NFL football operations representative.

Play, as was the case in Arizona, may continue as long as the roof is closed, but the roof must remain closed for the remainder of the game.
