Prepare to leave warning of ‘difficult to control’ bushfires near Buckland

Updated at 5 p.m., Saturday November 2: The bushfire alert level has now been lowered to monitor conditions.

“There is no immediate threat,” says the TFS.

“The fire is moving toward Westerley toward Sand River Road and Buckland Road.”

Earlier: Smoke blankets the Buckland area on the state’s east coast as a bushfire burns near Sand River Road.

The fire was reported to authorities around 6pm on Friday evening, with a watch, action and current preparedness warning to leave later.

The Tasmanian Fire Service said at 2.45pm on Saturday the fire was expected to hit Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas within two hours.

“The fire is spreading westward… (and) should be difficult to control,” warns the TFS.

Firefighters are currently on site battling the fire and several helicopters arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m.

Tasmania Police have closed Sand River Road at Buckland Road and are turning away those who do not need to be in the area.

Tasmanian firefighters say people nearby should act now to protect themselves and their homes.

“If you are not prepared for a bushfire, be prepared to move to a safer location,” they said.

“Only travel if it is safe to do so. If you have developed a bushfire plan, check it now.

“If you don’t live near Sand River Road, Buckland Road and the surrounding area, stay away.”

A a severe weather warning is in place for most of the state this afternoonwith gusts above 100 km/h expected.
