Springfield plans to increase tax exemptions for disabled veterans

SPRINGFIELD — Disabled veterans should soon be eligible for bigger tax breaks on real estate and motor vehicles and will have to go through far less red tape to qualify.

THE Heroes Actapproved by the House and Senate and signed by Gov. Maura T. Healey this summer, allows all communities to expand property tax exemptions for veterans injured while serving in the military. Springfield officials announced Tuesday that it will be one of the first communities in the state to try to adopt the changes.

“This law eliminates a lot of paperwork and hassle,” said Councilwoman Kateri Walsh. “It will make things a lot easier. This is a huge benefit for veterans.
