LG Display has unveiled the world’s first expandable display, capable of extending up to 50%.

The display marks a major advancement in screen technology, as it can stretch, bend and twist into different shapes without losing functionality.

The latest prototype features a 12-inch display that can expand up to 18 inches, offering high-resolution visuals with 100 pixels per inch (ppi) and color output in red, green and blue (RGB).

This is a major improvement over LG’s 2022 stretch display prototype, which featured a maximum stretch of 20%.

The new model exceeds expectations by achieving a stretch rate of 50%, opening up exciting possibilities for future designs and applications.

To achieve this milestone, LG Display has introduced several advanced technologies. The screen is made from a special silicone material, similar to that used in contact lenses, for better stretchability.

The design also includes a new wiring structure and micro-LED light sources as small as 40 micrometers, ensuring durability. The screen can be stretched more than 10,000 times while maintaining clear visuals even under extreme conditions such as temperature changes or physical impacts.

The stretch screen’s thin, lightweight design allows it to adhere to curved surfaces including clothing and skin, making it ideal for industries such as fashion, wearable technology and automotive design.

For example, LG has presented ideas such as wearable displays for firefighter uniforms that provide real-time updates or car panels that adjust shape for better functionality.

This project is part of South Korea’s initiative to develop next-generation display technologies, led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

Since 2020, LG Display has collaborated with 19 domestic partners to develop these innovative displays.

By carrying out the project, LG has obtained critical technologies that can dominate the next generation market, while strengthening South Korea’s capacity to produce materials, components and equipment locally.

Soo-young Yoon, CTO of LG Display, said the company is committed to creating a sustainable future for the display industry through collaboration between companies, universities and researchers.

Expandable displays are expected to revolutionize industries, making this breakthrough a significant achievement for LG Display and the future of technology.
