Controversial signs spotted near polling locations in Coastal Bend

ROBSTOWN, Texas — Almost everywhere you go, there’s a campaign sign to your left or right asking you to vote for this person or that person. However, some signs raise eyebrows.

These signs were seen just beyond the 100-foot mark of the Johnny Calderon Center in Robstown.

These signs were seen just beyond the 100-foot mark of the Johnny Calderon Center in Robstown.

The signs have been seen in various areas on the west side of Corpus Christi and in Robstown. It is unclear who posted these signs and why.

Luis Amador, a Corpus Christi resident for more than seventy years, said the signs could be seen as an intimidation tactic or a deliberate act of annoyance to Latino voters.

“I don’t like the signs,” Amador said. “They want to try to confuse people and disrupt people.”

Some, like Jorge Cruz, believe that these signs make no difference to voters.

“It doesn’t affect me at all,” Cruz said. “It’s a waste of money on the part of whoever made them.”

The law requires political signs to include a disclaimer, a reference to the person who paid for the sign and a transportation code.

The law requires political signs to include a disclaimer, a reference to the person who paid for the sign and a transportation code.

At the bottom of any campaign sign is a disclaimer, a shipping code, and a reference to the person who paid for the sign.

Indeed, according to Election Code Chapter 255, state law requires these elements to be included in any political advertisement. Signs referring to illegal voting do not include any of these warnings, codes or references.

Political consultant Joseph Ramirez, who has worked on numerous political campaigns over the past 25 years, both at the state and federal levels, believes these signs have racist implications.

“The goal is very clear. They target rural areas like Robstown and the west side of Corpus Christi. ” Ramirez said. “They know that the majority of voters who come from there are Hispanic and they want to imply that Hispanics are illegal and that we should not be involved in voting. »
