No offensive coordinator change for Bears, says Matt Eberflus

The day offensive coordinators and head coaches are laid off in the NFL, there will be no changes to the Bears offensive coordinator position.

Coach Matt Eberflus is confident offensive coordinator Shane Waldron can reverse the offensive slump they’ve experienced over nearly the last two games after surging against three straight struggling teams.

“The changes we’re going to make is we’re going to look inward and make sure we’re doing a good job using our talents and skills and just general, basic execution of our plan.” , said Eberflus. “And we need to make sure that we do that going forward, and we will have that plan in place here in the next 48 hours.”

It didn’t go well on Sunday, so expecting a turnaround might be too much to ask. Caleb Williams had his second straight game averaging under 5.6 yards per pass attempt and with a passer rating of 68.9, he now has a passer rating of 65.4 with 49.2% passing. success over the last two games, after going on a four-game streak with a 106.4 passer rating and nine touchdowns with just three interceptions.

Eberflus believes better management can be a safety valve for Williams and the passing game.

“We’re working on exactly what we need to improve and that starts for me with the running game on offense, then defense and for me it all comes down to that,” Eberflus said. “We have to do a really good job of establishing that and that’s where you get your play passes and that’s where you get your play screens and get yourself in a good position to run the third down if you succeed.

“So that’s what we’re looking at carefully today, among other things.”

Waldron’s offense failed to score a touchdown and had no drives longer than 35 yards. They continued to flounder in the first quarters without scoring again, although their first drive showed promise before getting bogged down in penalties. They still have 10 points in the first quarter.

Calls for applications for coaching positions are raining down on social networks and talk shows. They have been since the end of the first half on Sunday with the Bears trailing 21-9. Then they remained scoreless in the second half.

“Any time you lose two games in a row in the NFL, there’s always a heightened sense of urgency because you have to get that win column back,” Eberflus said. “It was no different than the beginning of the year, when we lost a few games in a row. It’s definitely the same.”

The sense of urgency is greater now that the Bears are one game away from depleting their supposed “cupcake” opposition pool. They host New England and absolutely need a win just to take the pressure off Halas Hall.

“We need to find answers and find solutions to the current situation,” Eberflus said. “We’re moving in the right direction for three weeks, and then the last two weeks, we need to make sure we find answers now, going into this week.

“We don’t have a lot of time. We have less than 48 hours until practice. We have to do a good job. Before the players get in the building, we have to do a good job of finding those answers. “

The fact that the Bears are heading home should at least provide some optimism about the offense.

Williams has a passer rating of 105.1 at home but only 67.2 on the road.

The inability to put together scoring marches in the first quarter weighs on the offense.

“We have to get ready to play and score points from Drive 1, from Play 1, and I think we got into some negative plays and scenarios in those cases, and also had flashes of great success on the first drive,” said catcher Rome Odunze. “So we have to maintain that all the way to the end zone, so you know we can start fast. Set the tempo of the game.”
