Additional funds approved for $40.8 million wastewater treatment project in Leawood

LEAWOOD, Kan. (KCTV) – Additional funds have been approved for a now $40.8 million project to build new wastewater pumping stations along State Line Rd. in Leawood.

County officials announced that on Thursday, October 31, Johnson County Board of Commissioners At the meeting, members authorized an additional $30.1 million to be spent on the State Line Road pump stations and the Forcemain project. A total of $40.8 million has now been approved for the project.

County commissioners noted that the project includes construction of two new pump stations and a common forcemain in Leawood to facilitate flow from the Leawood Basin to Johnson County Wastewater Tomahawk Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility.

County leaders said the project is a crucial part of JCW’s 25-year integrated plan. Once completed, the project will reduce the flow sent to Kansas City, Missouri, for processing. This will save customers approximately $100 million over 20 years. It should be amortized within 7 years.

Additionally, officials said commissioners approved a partnership agreement with the city of Leawood for roadway and five optic improvements. The $12.4 million contract was awarded to Rodriguez Mechanical Contractors, Inc., while a $10.8 million contract was awarded to BRB Contractors, Inc.

County leaders said work is expected to begin in the fall. Schedules continue to be finalized.
