SAPD officer suspended 30 days after getting drunk while DJing at real estate gala

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio Police Department officer was suspended 30 days after being accused in March of causing drunkenness at a real estate awards ceremony where she was hired to perform as a DJ.

Officer Kristie Bush, who told police she played music at events outside of her duties as DJ Kristie Rose, was initially given a 45-day suspension in August, according to city disciplinary archives.

The suspension was later reduced to 30 days after Bush met with SAPD Chief William McManus.

The March 16 incident at the Rosenberg Sky Room at the University of the Incarnate Word led UIW PD and later SAPD officers to respond to the scene.

UIW PD released an incident report and 11.5 hours of body-worn camera footage from the incident following a public records request from KSAT earlier this month.

“I’m not going to sit here and look like a fucking criminal”

Gala attendees told police that Bush loudly interrupted the event’s host while he was giving a speech on stage.

While describing the unrest, a UIW officer was recorded on his body worm camera saying that Bush swore loudly and shouted, “Let’s have a fucking party!”

A woman attending the event was seen on a body-worn camera telling Bush: “I also knew you were sitting next to my son and you were super drunk and loud.” »

Bush, 32, who was hired by the owner of a real estate company to play music from 10 p.m. to midnight, told police she played the music as attendees arrived for the award ceremony prices a few hours earlier.

In the footage, she repeatedly complained that she hadn’t been paid and that her contract stipulated that she received payment before starting her set.

“Let me just ask him one thing.” Do you think I can organize an event like this without being able to pay you? “” the event host asked Bush.

A second off-duty SAPD officer, Jonathan Kavanagh, was escorted from the venue by UIW police after a heated confrontation between him, the event host and a friend of the host who told the police that he had been sent to see if Bush was present. the right condition to perform as a DJ.

The footage shows Kavanagh being pulled away from the two men as the host tells him to remove his hand from his face.

SAPD officials confirmed this month that Kavanagh was not disciplined following the incident.

Reached by phone, the event host told KSAT that 350 people were in attendance and that Bush had clearly become intoxicated while waiting to perform her set.

He said he was contacted by an SAPD internal affairs investigator in late summer to provide a statement, but was not informed that Bush had been suspended for the incident.

Bush told police she had two alcoholic drinks, then said she had one, then said she had “a wine” but didn’t finish the drink, according to the pictures.

Several UIW agents noticed in the footage that Bush had bloodshot eyes and was having difficulty speaking.

Several gala attendees told police that Bush appeared intoxicated, according to the footage.

While waiting for SAPD supervisors to arrive on scene, Bush argued with UIW police who refused to let her briefly go to her vehicle.

“It’s not worth my career. All I want to do is go vape. It’s worthless. I just want to get off, go to my truck, vape. Can I please go vape? » asked Bush.

After a UIW PD supervisor told Bush “no,” Bush responded, “Why?” I didn’t cause any disturbance. It’s not a crime.

The supervisor then told Bush that the incident had become a disturbance.

“I’m not going to sit here and look like a fucking criminal. You’re right. You gave a very good example. And that’s why we should just do our duty and risk our lives instead of putting in four fucking hours,” Bush said before ending his comments and taking a seat near the entrance to the room.

Bush was then questioned by an SAPD sergeant in a back hallway of the room, the footage shows.

Bush’s SAPD disciplinary documents indicate that after a female SAPD officer arrived on the scene with a cadet, Bush asked the cadet, “What are you looking at?”

No one was criminally charged following the gala incident and it did not result in the filing of a criminal complaint, records show.

Bush ultimately left the venue without playing his set, footage shows.

Kavanagh was eventually allowed back inside the venue, with a police escort, to take down Bush’s DJ equipment.

Bush was suspended for rule violations, including use of intoxicants, discourtesy to the public/colleague, conduct prejudicial to good order and unfitness to report for duty, according to city disciplinary records.

Bush did not respond to a phone call from KSAT seeking comment for this story.
