Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly rips Yankees, says World Series was a ‘total mismatch’

Late last month, the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated the franchise’s eighth anniversary. World Series title.

A 7-6 victory in Game 5 of the series eliminated the American League champion New York Yankees. The Dodgers won an instant classic opener, with Freddie Freeman hitting a grand slam in the 10th inning.

Los Angeles won the next two games and was on the verge of winning the championship.

The Yankees managed to win Game 4, but some fifth inning errors in Game 5 proved to be more than New York could overcome. Joe Kelly, California native and Dodgers pitcher, didn’t hesitate to explain without filter why the Dodgers beat the Yankees.

During the last edition of the “Baseball is not boring” Podcast, Kelly went after the Yankees by suggesting they should have been a lower seed in the playoffs.

“We’ve seen it every game. Just let them throw the ball to the infield. They can’t make a play,” Kelly said. “It was a mismatch from the start. If we did a playoff reranking, they could be ranked the eighth or ninth best team in the playoffs.

“You put the Padres in front of them. You put the Phillies in front of them. You put the Mets in front of them. You put the Braves in front of them, and the Braves just had no luck because they had to play this schedule double.

Even though the Yankees only needed five games to eliminate the Guardians In the ALCS, Kelly thinks Cleveland played “better baseball across the board.”

“I mean, the Guardians played like crap, but the Guardians played better (defense) and better baseball all around,” Kelly said before again calling the Dodgers’ game with the Yankees a “total inadequacy”.

New York’s defensive issues surfaced well before Game 5. In the first game of the series, Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres misplayed a throw that allowed Shohei Ohtani to reach third base. The Dodgers’ star designated hitter finally made it safely to home plate to tie the game.

“Shohei got an extra base at third on a sloppy play by Gleyber (Torres). It’s well known, we all knew it. … We’re the Dodgers. … We know every little detail.”
