Who is on the ballot? Compare candidates on issues

When it comes to issues that Mississippi voters care about as they cast their ballots Tuesday, topics related to the economy, health care and border security top the list.

Election experts also said the state’s voters are most concerned about the average cost of living, job creation and other forms of economic development.

“The biggest problem tends to be economic,” Dallas Breen, executive director of the Stennis Institute, said earlier this year. “So it’s about inflation, it’s about the cost of gasoline, it’s about the cost of living. We have one of the lowest per capita incomes and household incomes in the country. So when, when life is more expensive, this hits middle Mississippi and harder than other states.”

Tangentially, Breen said issues on the national and state stage such as border security, health care rights and Medicaid expansion are also on voters’ minds as they choose who to vote for this primary.

Not all of Mississippi’s candidates running for U.S. House and Senate seats have expressed their public opinions on the deciding issues, but here are some of the issues they have mentioned as the Magnolia State gets underway. heads to the polls:

Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District: Kelly v. Black

In Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Trent Kelly faces Democrat Dianne Black.

Kelly, who has not faced a primary opponent this year, serves on the House Armed Services Committee as chairman of the Sea Power and Projection Forces Subcommittee. Kelly also serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence as Chairman of the Defense Intelligence and Air Architecture Subcommittee. Additionally, Kelly serves on the House Agriculture Committee.

Black does not appear to be running on any specific policy issue, but told the Clarion Ledger earlier this year that she was running on a promise to help maintain and increase the number of Democrats in Congress. She also plans to be a pro-Biden and Harris congresswoman and support Democratic leadership.

Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District: Thompson v. Eller

In District 2, Democratic incumbent Bennie Thompson is running against Republican challenger Ron Eller.

Thompson, who has held his seat since 1993, is running again and hopes to focus on nutrition access and food security for people in his district, as well as solving the state’s rural hospital problems . He is also a supporter of Medicaid expansion and job creation in Mississippi.

Ron Eller said in a written statement to the Clarion Ledger that he wants to focus on improving education standards in schools and prisons. He also believes in creating an environment where people can get educated and get more jobs.

Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District: Guest runs unopposed

Republican U.S. House Representative Michael Guest is running unopposed this year.

Jarvis Gordon, who had qualified to run against Guest as a Democrat, withdrew from the race in late February.

Mississippi’s 4th Congressional District: Ezell v. Raybon

Republican incumbent Mike Ezell is running against Democrat Craig Raybon.

Ezell was elected in 2022, replacing the seat’s former incumbent Steven Palazzo. Some of his campaign priorities, as noted on his website, This is anti-abortion legislation, supports law enforcement, border security, focuses on domestic policy issues, and supports the military.

“In Congress, I work hard to grow our economy by reducing taxes and regulations, and to secure America’s southern border to stop illegal immigration,” Ezell said in a written response to the Clarion Ledger. “As a former law enforcement official for 40 years, I have witnessed the problems caused by illegal immigration and drugs, so we need to end this border crisis now.”

Raybon did not respond to multiple requests to discuss his campaign.

His website says he cares about women’s rights, health care, job opportunities and increasing wages.

US Senate from Mississippi: Wicker v. Pinkins

In the U.S. Senate race in Mississippi, Republican incumbent Roger Wicker faces Democratic challenger Ty Pinkins.

Key issues Wicker is campaigning for include protecting the U.S. border through wall construction, Second Amendment gun rights, economic growth, the anti-abortion movement and increased military spending.

Pinkins launched his campaign for U.S. Senate last year before withdrawing and running an unsuccessful campaign for Mississippi secretary of state. After his defeat, Pinkins announced in January that he would return to run for U.S. Senate.

Pinkins said he is running for criminal justice reform, access to affordable health care, education reform across Mississippi and the nation, ensuring affordable housing, fighting against removal voters, investing in sustainable energy and economic development.
