Wearing shoes and slippers is prohibited in this Indian village; know why

During the summer months, some people wear slippers to protect themselves from the hot ground, while children go to school without shoes. People often carry their shoes and slippers in their hands.

Wearing slippers and shoes provide much-needed comfort to your feet, especially on rough roads and difficult terrains. However, there is a village in India where wearing shoes like slippers and shoes is prohibited.

Andaman, a small village in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, has banned its residents from wearing shoes. The village is about 450 kilometers from Chennai. People generally take off their shoes at the entrance to the village. The community was mainly engaged in agriculture and work in the fields. In this unique setting, only the elderly or sick are allowed to wear slippers, while the rest of the villagers walk barefoot.

During the summer months, some people wear slippers to protect themselves from the hot ground, while children go to school without shoes. People often carry their shoes and slippers in their hands.

This is a long-standing tradition which is a sign of respect and love for the village deity.

According to a News18 report, the villagers believe that a goddess named ‘Muthyalamma’ protects their community. In March and April, they honor the goddess with worship and celebrate a three-day festival.

In his honor, villagers refrain from wearing shoes and slippers. Just as individuals enter a temple barefoot, they consider their village a sacred space and walk without shoes. This practice, anchored in their beliefs, has been practiced for years.

Visitors from other villages are informed of this tradition upon arrival and are expected to comply with it; those who disagree must still adhere to this custom.

In addition, villagers have long believed that wearing slippers in the village can cause high fever that is difficult to cure. For this reason, they generally avoid wearing shoes and prefer to walk barefoot.
