Fighting addiction and the scourge of illicit drugs

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – The Centers for Disease Control says there has been a decline in drug overdoses in the United States. However, the opioid epidemic is also closely linked to controversial border policies. Both presidential candidates have taken strong positions on this issue.

There are far fewer drug overdoses in America than in previous years, but an average of 100,000 people still die each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. While there’s no denying the problem persists, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have different approaches to finding a solution.

Donald Trump places the blame squarely on a group: “I told you about this phenomenon. This is called migrant crime. This is a new category of crime. And it is probably the cruelest crime of all.

Kamala Harris points out that the former president is not tackling real problems: “Donald Trump is more concerned with scaring people. Create fear. Working on a problem instead of what real leaders do, which is participating in problem solving.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that 48.5 million Americans struggle with addiction, according to their 2023 figures.

Donald Trump also blames policies allowing significant immigration: “They took the drug dealers and the drug lords. They took all these people and smuggled them into the United States.

The former president believes that the solution lies in cutting off supplies. The Drug Enforcement Administration, part of the Department of Homeland Security, says drugs are illegally brought into the country by cartels.

Tim Walz is the Democratic vice presidential nominee. “They (Republicans) want to blame everything on migrants and they don’t want to take any responsibility or come up with a plan.”

The Biden-Harris Administration recently announced $240 million in funding to expand substance use disorder services at more than 400 community health centers across the country.

Kamala Harris says, “I care about solving problems. And as President of the United States, I will focus every day on solving the issues that affect you and your family.

With Harris focused on expanding on the Biden administration’s proposals…and Trump focused on the supply of illegal drugs flowing across the border…voters must now decide who they believe can lead us out of the drug crisis. American drug addiction.
